First type of Singapore Holidays: Public Holidays.
There are 11 gazetted public holidays in Singapore for 2018.
Under the Employment Act, if a public holiday falls on a Saturday, an employee who is not required to work on a Saturday is entitled to another day off or an extra day’s salary in lieu of that public holiday.
Also under the Employment Act:
– An employee who is required to work on a public holiday is entitled to an extra day’s salary at the basic rate of pay
– Alternatively, the employer and employee may mutually agree to substitute a public holiday for another working day
– An employer also has the additional option of granting managers and executives, time-off-in-lieu for working on a public holiday. The time off should consist of a mutually agreed number of hours.
School-going children get an extra day off on the day after National Day. So, if parents take leave on 10 August, the whole family can enjoy an amazing four-day-long weekend in August.
School-going children also get one more day’s of leave on Monday, 2 July in celebration of Youth Day, and on Friday, 5 October for Children’s Day. And there will be yet another three-day long weekend to spend with the family.
