Potential and future developments around One Pearl Bank
Greater Southern Waterfront City
The planned relocation of the City Terminals and Pasir Panjang Terminal to Tuas will free up 325 and 600 hectares of waterfront land respectively. With the first set of berths at Tuas Port to be operational by 2025, the downtown and southern port area will eventually be phased out. This area is known as the Greater Southern Waterfront. The total area of about 1,000 hectares of land – an area three times the size of Marina Bay – would be up for development in the Greater Southern Waterfront after 2030.
There are six broad ideas for the Greater Southern Waterfront:
Idea 1: New Opportunities to live, work and play (To create many differentiated waterfront districts, each with unique characters and experiences). Bayfront and Marina Central areas next to CBD are currently under development while Marian South will be launched a few years’ time. Remaining areas including Labrador, Tanjong Pagar and Pulau Brani will be planned and implemented in the longer term.
Idea 2: Extend the city to the Greater Southern Waterfront (new housing, commercial, cultural and entertainment uses to be integrated with both our downtown and the surrounding housing and businesses near the city)
Idea 3: Expand the network of public spaces (Extension of the Central Linear Park in Marina Bay to the waters of Keppel Channel that would overlook Pulau Brani in the distance. Alternatively, a new pedestrian axis that branches out from the Central Linear Park to new city districts could be created and designated as a car-free zone to promote vibrant street life)
Idea 4: Capitalise on Blue Assets (New reservoir created between Tanjong Pagar and Pulau Brani to retain rainwater at the Greater Southern Waterfront and store excess water from the Marina Reservoir that is currently discharged into the sea)
Idea 5: Create a continuous waterfront (30 km-long waterfront for walking, running and cycling)
Idea 6: Connect green and open spaces (To promote biodiversity and augment the green network in the densely built-up city, existing green spaces such as Labrador Park, Berlayer Creek and Mount Faber could be linked to Pulau Brani’s existing hillock through a green corridor)
The Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) is a joint line between the Thomson Line and the Eastern Region Line. The 43km TEL will add 31 new stations to the existing rail network, with 7 interchange stations, which will link to the East-West Line, North-South Line, North-East Line, Circle Line and the Downtown Line.
The completion of the Thomson-East Coast Line will enable Outram Park MRT Station to be a triple-line interchange. There are only 2 other triple-line interchange, namely Marina Bay and Dhoby Ghaut.
By 2021, the TEL will enjoy direct access to the CBD and Marina Bay. Commuters going to Shenton Way, Orchard or Gardens by the Bay have the option of breezing there by train.
